MM #57: The Dangers of Marketing Alone

What People are Saying About ‘First Fifty Clients’

Simply Brilliant

I listened to the disc for the first time on Monday and have already booked 45 people for exploratory sessions. I may have to extend my goal to 100 people in 100 days. I never knew I could inspire people to take advantage of a free session. You have motivated me into action and I wish to thank you for this. ” – Loretta Digger, UK

2. FEATURE: The Dangers of Marketing Alone

Too many solo-preneurs and small business owners are trying to be lone rangers in the marketing world.

I asked my good friend Suzanne-Falter Barnes, who helps service professionals take the necessary steps to get nationally known, to share with us the dangers of marketing alone….(P.S. Make sure you get your f’ree JumpStart Kit at the bottom)

* * *
Ever feel like you’re pedaling fast but simply not going anywhere with your marketing?

That seems to be a common theme these days, and I know why. Even though the Net is laden with marketing programs of all kinds, few of them really rise up and truly transform most people’s marketing efforts.

Why? Because even the best material in the world can’t overcome some basic problems human foibles … if you insist on implementing them alone. So that’s why even I, seasoned marketing pro, turn to coaches and consultants for help with my own marketing. And it’s making a huge difference in my business!

These are some of the dangers to doing your own marketing … and some helpful tips at the end.

1. You have no perspective. You may know your service inside out, but if you’re like most of us, you have no idea what the market will respond to. An SEO consultant I worked with recently suggested that my current Get Known Now bonus didn’t appeal broadly enough to my market … so I changed it. I’m already getting a better response.

2. You don’t have a professional overview of the market. Good consultants really know all the markets your product could appeal to. They can suggest some you haven’t even thought of, or reveal new ways to reach existing markets, based on their own research.

3. You’re not up on the latest techniques — or may lack the technical know how to get the job done. You may not even know what you don’t know, or where to find the resources that will help you. And yet, better technology and resources can make your business boom!

4. You won’t get out of your comfort zone alone. Once we step out of our comfort zones, real progress can begin to take place. Recently I pushed one of my group coaching clients to really hunker down, get serious, and define what she was all about. She kept insisting there was no market difference for her services … and then, just when she’d almost given up … we found the right place to dig to really define her brand. I know she wouldn’t have gone there alone.

5. You may think you can do it, but are secretly intimidated. Along with that comfort zone comes a sense of what we think we can and cannot do. And often we don’t even admit to ourselves where we stop. Future success remains a fuzzy, rosy blur. But a good consultant or action group will give you specific steps to break intimidating processes down AND the support to make sure you got the job done. It’s certainly OK to be afraid — if you can push through your resistance.

6. You don’t know which expert or program to listen to. Committing to a program or consultant moves you forward, because it forces you to get out of overwhelm or confusion and take concrete action steps. (And there are a lot of good programs and coaches out there … so just pick one!)

7. You lack accountability. The best part of coaching and group programs is that they give you a structure to stick to — and accountability for your promises. You need to show up and say to another living human being (or several) what you’ve done and what fell through the cracks. That’s powerful medicine for those who are inclined to break promises.

8. You may lack the discipline to measure and track everything. But when you bring in a consultant or a coaching program, suddenly everything changes. You’re suddenly taking your business more seriously, in the detached, professional lens of other business professionals.

9. Frustration can lead to inertia. We all have the tendency to give up when we experience a setback or a loss. Yet, that’s just when we need to hunker down and move forward, because that’s when we can find great lessons ahead. (See the comfort zone comments above in point 4.) Supporters who actually care about you and your progress will see to it that you keep moving on.

10. We’re often afraid to even begin. If you know you have a mission, but you just can’t seem to get started, this could be why. A good marketing program or a coach can push you over the hump to the point where you can forge ahead on your own. Think about it — if you’re not going to do this work you’re moved to do, who is?

2. FEATURE: The Secret to My Success

I’m a bit stunned – but in a good way!

Recently I got a big fat check from the Australian Government (they assist exporters and I’m an exporter).

An hour later I got another email showing the biggest deposit to my account ever – coming in from a really big alliance we had last month.

And while my bank account is going through the roof, I checked the results of our holiday promotion….

…the one where I thought we should get more than 30 orders – maybe as many as 100 … but we had 409 orders come in within 10 days! This is also going to be a huge month.

(I can just see my distributor in his one man office getting all those out! Thanks Ashley.)

So as you can see – it’s quite a day. In fact, quite a week. Quite a month. Quite a year.

The Secret

I started wondering – what did I do? What do I do that’s different than most? What did I do that has caused this massive spike in results? This wonderful success?

I wanted to know – one, so I can keep doing it, and secondly so I can pass it on to you.

(In case you hadn’t noticed, that’s what I do. I try things out until I find what works, and then I pass it on to you guys).

And here’s what I found …
…

…

I’m constantly investing.

No – not money. I mean time. New things … new ideas … new projects.

Building things that may or may not pay off:

  • Ezine
  • Web site
  • Second ezine
  • More web sites
  • New product
  • Add value to old product
  • Create a discussion board
  • Create an email discussion list
  • Volunteer to help the ICF
  • Start playing guitar and singing (badly) for pubs and parties

*** I’m talking weeks, and sometimes months. Often on projects that don’t produce a dime. (Hmmm … maybe that’s not so smart!) ***

  • Recreate brand, implement through 15 sites
  • Create free download
  • Start coach training school (a good 2 years went into that one)
  • Try advertising
  • Try public speaking
  • Try advanced web strategies
  • Go for the national media
  • Offer to coach for a national TV show
  • Write to Oprah
  • Get promoted to Chairperson of ICF Publicity Committee (network with board members)

*** I’ve ‘failed’ so many times it’s ridiculous. Often it seems like a waste. But looking back, now that it’s all coming together so well, it just seems like throwing a hundred hooks in the water, and finding a few of them landed some fish. Which in turn started attracting bigger fish… ***

  • Target celebrities for coaching
  • Speak at a conference
  • Call a radio show
  • Meet with a big internet marketer for coffee
  • Start http://www.freegoalsreport.com/ (6 months +)
  • Hiring
  • Have a booth at a conference (meet Jack Canfield, cross promote, meet Bill Harris, cross promote …)
  • Build Becomeacoach.com (6-12 months)

*** Many things don’t pay off. In fact perhaps most. But right now many things are coming together, and bam!

I see another bam happening next year. Why? Because there are things I’ve spent over a year on that haven’t borne fruit yet.

And then another bam the year after. Why? Because I am investing now in a new company that I’m really excited about.

The point? We’ll – it’s pretty obvious don’t you think?

Keep moving.

Keep growing.

Keep producing.

Keep trying.

Keep talking.

Keep creating.

It doesn’t matter if 95 out of 100 don’t go anywhere. You’ll learn a massive amount from the 95 that don’t, and really enjoy the results from the 5 that do!

Action: What will you invest in?

What are YOU working on now, that might pay off in 3, 6 or 12 month’s time?

What projects do YOU want to make happen?

As well as making ends meet, are you also investing in your future?

1) Think about the future of your business. Envision what you would love to see happen. What are you doing today that will bring you closer to that future?

2) Post the next project(s) you plan on investing in at the blog . Remember, it doesn’t have to be money. It might be your time.

Enjoy!

What’s possible in YOUR relationship?

I was very moved to receive this success story from a reader of my ebook: ‘The Truth About Women’:

“David, I have to say thank you sooooo MUCH!!! My husband and I seemed to be worlds apart until I found your ebook. We were in such bad shape I thought there was no where left to go.

We starting reading ‘The Truth About Women’ together about a week ago and it was as if the light came on. He actually looked at me and said “I GET IT!” I understand now what you’ve been trying to tell me all along”

We have our good days and our bad days, but the bad ones are becoming far less and when we need to we just reference your ebook to seek coaching!

I know this all sounds so stereotypical but it is the truth. Thank you so much. You have truly saved a family from it’s own demise!”

2. FEATURE: How to Travel and Make Money at the Same Time

Wouldn’t it be nice to find a way keep getting paid while traveling?

How about getting paid FOR traveling!?

You’re on the road, out of pocket, out of the country, out of sight – do you have to be out of income?

We all want to travel the world – but how do you do it and finance it while you travel?

My good friend Christian seems to float from country to country – for years now. I figured it was time I grilled him (and my R&D team) for answers, so I can pass them along to you.

Go from passive, sunburned tourist to getting involved. From postcard buyer to postcard seller. You have skills and ideas that can sell internationally, right there around the home.

DISCLAIMER: As always, I take no responsibilty for your actions. These are ideas only. Whatever path you choose, investigate the risks and get professional advice before taking action.

Category 1) Don’t Work

This first group of ideas below can take significant effort to set up. But once it’s done – you can be set for life! I’m talking about passive income – money that doesn’t mind that you’re on a walkabout (That’s Aussie talk for – well – walking about.)

Ideas like:

  • eBooks and eCourses
  • downloadable sessions/seminars
  • a drop-ship Internet company
  • store up savings, invest well,
and then pay yourself the interest
  • be kept by a rich man or woman

But people had ideas of other ways to travel and not really work:

  • be a courier, delivering something of value to your destination (like documents or a car!)
  • be a companion for the elderly or disabled, or for a child or woman traveling alone. Or even accompany a pet on a flight!
  • write a book as you travel; make money from it down the track

Category 2) Work

Perhaps you’re not in a position to succeed with the Don’t Do Work option. This is where the fertile minds of the SolutionBox bloggers really came into their own.

Get accredited in the travel industry, and then using those credentials to gain benefits and incentives for specific resorts and hotels.

Blogger Paul K has friends that do a music tour – not rock stars, just ordinary guys who play an instrument, but go on the road.

Kim Knight and others suggested teaching English as a Second Language, noting that there is significant demand for it worldwide, and it’s generally not required to speak the local language.

And the work doesn’t need to be for cash – offering to work as barter could quickly get you a ride, a meal, a room, etc.

Important: Always check what you propose with an immigration lawyer (or at least your destination countries immigration web site) before working in another country!

Ideas include working as a:

  • coach or consult! I’ve gone to many cities
and been able to keep my coaching practice going – all you need is an internet cafe and a good calling card
  • run teleclasses on any topic you like
  • internet marketer
  • nanny or aupair
  • camp counselor (you can often get a cultural exchange visa. e.g. search for ‘Camp America’. I did this myself!)
  • photographer
  • sound or lighting technician with a traveling show
  • ski or snowboard instructor (I’ve done this too! Didn’t get paid, but a free season pass)
  • work on a ship – cook, deckhand, activities coordinator
  • work at a resort (I’ve done this too!)
  • butler/personal assistant
  • translator
  • be a guide
  • athletic trainer
  • motivational speaker
  • be a spruiker (i.e. the people speaking on the microphone about perfume in department
    stores)
  • flight attendant
  • busker (honey b. well asks “what is busk?” – Webster says it’s “a person who entertains especially by playing music on the street”). Can you juggle?
  • anything on a cruise line
  • teaching – music, yoga
  • writer – get paid to write articles for travel or health magazines, or local English language newspapers
  • become an online gambler. e.g. poker. You could study gambling until you truly understand the risks and strategies.

Many jobs require no specific planning or training, and will be readily available in many locations:

  • wait staff, kitchen
help, bartender – especially in high season
  • dog-walking
  • cleaning
  • gardening
  • fruit or produce picker
  • massaging
  • source unique local product, and ship it back to sell at Western prices. Think eBay!

Make it happen

By looking at ways to make money while traveling, you’re also looking at new ways to experience a place.

Instead of coming home with just souvenirs and photographs, you could also come home with a deeper understanding of where you’ve been, and – with extra money in the bank!

Again, it is especially important before working in another country, to make sure that you check the legalities of what you can or can’t do work-wise and what, if any, visa requirements you need. Doing the legal research before you go may save you time, money, and possibly deportation!

Action Stations

2) What are your TWO favourite methods listed here?

3) Post your answers at the blog.

Have fun, and make money!

2. FEATURE: Aim Higher

What are you aiming for in your business?

What are you targeting?

Will you have achieved success if you actually get it?

Your Current Limits

I’ve noticed that when I am aiming to complete 8 chinups, that’s as many as I can do – no more. But when I aim for 10 – it seems I can somehow do 10.

Hmmm…

So say I’m looking for more subscribers and I aim for 1,000 new people – and I get it. When I target $2,000 in more revenue – that’s pretty much how it turns out.

I wonder – if I aimed for less, would that become my new limit? Would I be satisfied with having reached my lesser goal?

On the other hand, what if I aim for more – would that be the new number? The new limit?

It seems to me that we sometimes – in effect – put the ceiling on what we can achieve and what our company can do, simply by what we aim for.

What if you challenged your current goals and limits?

What if you aimed for a workday where disagreements never last more than 5 minutes? Or to triple current profits within 6 months? Or to move to a bigger office? Or to give better employee benefits – no matter what happens?

What if you decided to sell 50% more product this year instead of 10%?

Or made it your goal to build the best web site in your niche, even if you don’t have a current web site?

Or worked to get 4 different partnerships a month instead of in a year?

10 more new clients instead of 5?

2. FEATURE: Choosing the Best eZine Service
An eZine (electronic newsletter) is one of the best ways to keep in contact with clients and prospective clients. Once you have an idea of what to write about, how do you get your message to your subscriber list without emailing everyone individually?

Andrea Lee has the answers in this article, excerpted with permission, from her 39 Lessons course.

* * *

Choose a Service Provider

As with many things online, there is a sea of choices which can take time to wade through. So instead, consider these preferred recommended vendors first, and save yourself some time and money.

ListMailPro
www.BecomeaCoach.com/ListMailPro.htm

Dean Wiebe has created a slick system that you install on your own server, and costs $195. This is a one-time fee that allows you to create an unlimited number of lists, with an unlimited number of subscribers.

This is the best value for money I have found, and I usually look pretty hard. The only drawback of Dean’s system is that as of yet, he does not provide the option to time-release broadcasts. You can tell the system to send a broadcast on a certain date if you are going to be on vacation, but you can’t tell it to send three days after the last issue.

Although Dean has indicated he will be releasing an updated version that includes this option, know that it’s not available right now. To be fair, because the system also requires you to host it, you will need at least an hour or two of technical help getting it installed, which may cost up to $100.

(For the latter, I highly recommend Judith Buddle of http://www.ejude.com. Within an hour or two, you will be all set up. After installation, the system is simple as silk to use, and highly intuitive)

AWeber
www.BecomeaCoach.com/AWeber.htm

AWeber.com is a simple list management system on steroids. In fact, it bills itself as an autoresponse and sales lead management system, which it certainly is, however it performs all the basic functions of an ezine management system.

Double opt-in, multiple lists as well as timed broadcasts are all available with AWeber, and because it is a hosted service, you will not have to install anything. Payments are monthly, and there are several packages to choose from.

When Dean’s service just won’t do, I’ve relied heavily on Aweber.com in the last six months and am enjoying some of its more sophisticated bells and whistles. Customer service live online is fast and willing, which is a plus.

Ez Ezine
EzEzine.com

This is a service that I understand is very good, and if EzEzine had been released before I committed to the above two services, I would likely be a customer.

As it stands, you should know that EzEzine has a wonderful start up option that allows you to use it for free, up to a certain number of broadcasts and subscribers. This is their “lite” version, if you will.

Once you have the need and the demand for your broadcasts, you can easily and seamlessly upgrade your package.

Lastly, if you already use a shopping cart system, it’s very likely that you already have all of the above! And if you don’t already have a shopping cart system, but anticipate one in your near future, you may simply forgo the above and go whole hog with the shopping cart system.

Web Contact Pro
www.BecomeaCoach.com/WebContactPro.htm

The shopping cart system I highly recommend is Web Contact Pro.

WebContactPro is unparalleled, in my experience, for service with a smile, a real telephone number for help when needed, and really sweet features such as recurring billing and more. This one truly is a gem, folks.

Two important final notes…

One – As much as it’s a feat just to get one ezine management system in place, it’s wise to consider a back up system in case something happens to your primary one.

I happen to be the proud owner of an account with all but EzEzine.com above, and happily anticipate that if one of the services were to be down for any reason, I would have no problem using a redundant system to keep business going. Reserve is a good thing.

Two – New legislation in place as of January 2004 requires that ezine list owners such as ourselves follow certain policies.

In very brief, the best rule of thumb is to maintain a strict double-opt-in policy such as described above, and…include in every email your company’s full name, address and telephone number, along with a clear and easy unsubscribe link.

For any further legal advice on the issue of compliancy with new email legislation, I highly recommend legal counsel in the form of the brilliant Bob Silber. Bob’s free ezine (also double-opt-in) is available here: http://www.BobSilberletter.com.

Although fearsome sounding, the rules really are simple, and if followed, provide no real reason for unrest.

Onward and upward!

Best to you, Andrea Lee

Action

Thanks Andrea for helping us narrow down our choices!. Yes, it can be overwhelming. I’d also like to say I love my shopping cart/newsletter system that you can read about here: www.ShoppingCartReview.netI haven’t found anything to beat it.

If you have been procrastinating on starting a eZine, is now perhaps the time to start?

1) Chose an eZine service provider
2) Play around with the system and send test emails
3) Set up your subscriber page (most systems can show you how to do that)

4) Start building your list! (for a past newsletter on this, click here.)

Enjoy!

Action – now it’s time for YOU

Don’t just read my Celebratory, make this valuable for you.

Post your Celebratory where we can all acknowledge you, here.

Whether you spend 1 minute or 1 day on it doesn’t matter.

Just post it.

Remember, where there is gratitude and appreciation, there is growth. It’s critical to chew and swallow what you’ve received this year, before asking for more.

If you find yourself judging your achievements – good! This is an opportunity to look deeper at what you can be grateful for. AND – to light the fire in your belly to really make 2006 count.

Go ahead – post your Celebratory now.

50,000 people receive my newsletters. And about 10,000 people open a given one. If only 10% of you post your Celebratory on the blog right now, we’ll have 1,000 pieces of wonderful acknowledgment, celebration and gratitude.

Will yours be one of them?

Your Friends

I really want to read what my friends are celebrating this year. So I’m going to forward this invitation to them (no, for some strange reason they are not all subscribed already) and ask them all to post as well.

If you really want to start a gratitude movement, I invite you to do the same.(Hint: be sure and tell them to add their name to the post, so you can find it on the blog!)

Love and gratitude,

David
