Day 25 – I haven’t been able to post but again I’m still asking. Conducted a session on Friday. She was resistant; had had a previous bad experience with coaching. We made some real progress in our time together. She’s considering signing on…

Asked three more people… M.N., a woman from my church who keeps asking about coaching (she said yes); another woman at church who heard me talking about it (she said yes) and an entrepreneur I’ve worked with previously who said he would consider it and respond tomorrow.

Invitations offered, 25; accepted, 22; sessions conducted, 3.

Day 25: Emailed Dan S., also one of my leads from my networking business. I’m aware that I’m taking the easy approach and that many of these leads will now be only lukewarm, but there’s the possibility one of them will bite, which is enough for me right now as I’m working from home and my brother is staying with us until Nov 26th. It’s a little difficult to stay focused with everything going on around me.

Tomorrow I’m attending a networking event which I’m really looking forward to, and will take every opportunity to invite potential clients to an intro session. Then I have a session booked in the evening with one of my abovementioned leads, so I’m looking forward to that too.

PS: I also followed up with my brother-in-law, Bill, about contacting the HR director in his company (which is in my niche). This HR Director would be another good person to offer a sample session to.

I spoke with my cousin, Jack, this morning about what I am up to, and it was clear that a sample session was not appropriate. So after offering sample sessions anyway to others over this past month even when something did not feel right (because I did not want to let a day pass without making an offer) I realized that it really would be better for me to be more strategic and be laser focused on my niche rather than offering to anyone and everyone. So I finally gave myself permission to do the research necessary to find connections to the people in the companies I want to support so that I can get an introduction, instead of focusing blindly on a daily offer. And then, wouldn’t you know it, as soon as I did so, the phone rings and it is an old friend, Manual, who calls my husband and says his college is opening up a sustainability office which is right in my niche. So I guess I know who to follow up with now 🙂

Day 25: Took a break from contacting folks today. The pressure to take action daily has gotten me to be aware of how important it is to be clear about what I’m offering and to focus on contacting those who are more in line with the types of people that I want to coach vs just offering it to just anyone. This continues to be a great learning experience for me.

Yesterday I invited Lucy to do a session. She is a Direct Sales consultant and would like to improve her business. I am waiting for a reply.

Today I invited another Direct Sales leader, Darby. She is going to think about it and see if anyone on her team might be interested.

I was catching up with a long distance friend who mentioned her husband, who just got promoted, would be doing some lay offs within his group. She was trying to think of someone to refer to me for the 30 day challenge when it hit us both that he was right under our noses. Bottom line – I sent Gary a note highlighting my career transition services (sent a marketing piece) and suggested we do a sample session so he can test drive it first hand and refer me appropriate people! I emphasized that most of my work is with corporate leaders in transition (onboarding, mergers, downsizing, etc. ) He knows me from another life (a career in the 80’s) so I think I will be able to network through him. Funny, I didn’t think of this before the challenge!

Thanks for the encouragement, Jacleen. And, Jan, good job on getting the massages for coaching trade–I would take that deal any time! I am just about to launch a new website that I got in trade for coaching the partners who own the firm. It’s a great deal for both of us-I’m getting about $10,000 worth of branding & marketing. Today, I invited Laurie and we will meet on Tuesday to design the alliance. We have talked about money and I think she wants to trade make up (see has her own line of make up and make up studio) for coaching. I LOVE her make up, but that’s a LOT OF MAKE UP! Not sure I need that much! We’ll see.

Today I emailed to invite Meredyth, who also owns a construction company and participated in the workshop I gave last week. I would love to work with her because she is passionate about what she does, and committed to long term success. She could also be a great connector for me if she is happy with the results.

JERRY: One option might be 5% for 3 months prepaid, 10% for 6 months prepaid, 15% or 20% for 12 months, or something similar. It has value to me for a client to commit to a longer period of time and to prepay, because the energy I was using to fill that spot can now be used to create even more and better opportunities!

Have been coming alongside a young man experiencing struggles in his personal relationships. Seems to be doing better now. Just before cutting him loose it occurred to me that I might be able to help him in a more formal way through coaching. Coaching would be a natural transition.

Sent out the email and will follow up on it this week. Need to do a better job with converting samples in sales. Could also use suggestions.

P.S.: I haven’t figured out a “dream coachee” at this point. Listened to the audio again, and it still just doesn’t feel right for me.

I feel a bit too green for that yet. I figure once I’ve coached a few more people I’ll come up with someone. As of now, anyone who’ll pay me $200 or more/month and do so for 3 months or more in advance will be my dream client!!! And I hope to find several of those next week or so.

In fact, I had an idea (hopefully inspired):

I would like to help the folks in the alternative health world to make more money with their businesses, and so I’ll offer them coaching (I know quite a few, and I also have a “directory” which I will make use of. Least I could do for them is coach them on how to market their businesses better on the internet (that I really know well). So hopefully, I’ll get some takers…

So THOSE will be my dream coachee(s) for now.

Invited Steve H. today. Have thought of offering it to him for a while but was a bit shy. Could help him build his business and make it more profitable, and develop an online presence. He said he’s a bit crunched for time, but yes, he’d do it. 🙂

Also asked Robin and she said yes. Like someone above said, I don’t want to give too much detail for privacy reasons… I don’t want people read about themselves later…

And yesterday, I invited Lili who I ran into in the store.

Also sent out a bunch of emails to local Rotary clubs, offering a speech. Waiting for responses on that now.

Now I have a list of people to call for follow-up. Just realized that I never followed up with Stephanie after the initial follow-up. And also Teresa. Will do that mostly on Monday, or some of them anyway, the rest as the week goes on.

Caught up with Chris and am supposed to call her on Wednesday. Put it in my book.

I’m bit exhausted. Still need some better-paying clients, and preferably soon 😉

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    a month.

One of the intro sessions I did last week with George, he just confirmed by e-mail
that he will sign up for one year coaching for him and his partner. His question is what kind of price discount would I give if he paid for the year in advance. He stated
he wanted to pay Monday or Tues. Anyone have ideas for this?

After three days in my own process, down in the dumps really, I climbed ou t a little bit today. My thought was the following… We are meant to enjoy our existence, any thought that takes us away from that space is limitting our authentic self. This was a powerful thought for me. I gave a card to a guy from my former hockey team today. I didn’t offer a session. I will definately be offering a couple tomorrow. Time to play catch up. Also I have a session to deliver on Monday for Simon. Time to ramp it up as this challenge closes. Enjoy your existence today! Danny

Saturday: Today I invited my friend, Jeff. He is part of downsizing in the auto industry losing his engineering job a few months ago (like many others I know). He has been having a hard time with it and worried about getting another “job.” He has some very strong hobbies and just in conversation we’ve talked about creating work out of that. Anyway, I invited him to a formal coaching session and he agreed. We are meeting on Thursday.

Today I solidified a barter situation with a massage therapist after having one of her massages. I’ll coach her 3 times a month in exchange for 4-5 massages a month. I feel like I won the lottery.

Also followed up with the caterer who wants to start a new business with a partner. The later may be in job transition soon, says she wants to do a trial session with me and yet has not called over this last week. I told my contact that the question is: does she want to hold up moving forward herself waiting on this other person or keep the mometum going that we’ve started. I told her I’d be more than happy to work something out (discoutned fees along with a catered meals for 4/week.)

Just got back from a college Alumni gathering. Heard via one person that another at the party had been layed off by AMD (a marketing manager.) Later I engaged this gentleman, Brian B. in a conversation and ‘happened’ to mention that I was a Career Coach. “Interesting” he said. The conversation went from there…we talked about transferable skills and re-inventing yourself. Peeked his interest for sure. I offered him a free trial session. He didn’t have a card so I gave him mine along with some incentive for him to actually follow through and email me – told him I’d send him my Values Checklist which was of key importance for him for the next career move. We shall see!

Also gave a card to another, Carl, who has completed his PhD and has been job searching a few months now. For incentive to follow through on contacting me, I told him I’d send the Competency Assessment so he can add some key words to his resume.

There will be another Alumni event the day after Thanksgiving – I’ll be there!

Today’s invite goes to Vanessa B., owner of a construction company who attended the conference where I spoke last weekend. Given my background in construction, I have a special place in my heart for construction company owners, especially the women, so I was inspired to invite her. Even though I sent a generic invitation in my follow up, this was a personal invitation.

There are 3 other women business owners who attended, and they will be my invites for the next few days, as I reach further into this niche that fits me so well.

I’ll keep you posted on progress, and appreciate all your posts!

Well this was curious. I called my old friend, Laura, this evening, and from the get-go, I felt like she was seeing me in a selling mode which was not my intent. And so although she was polite, she held me at arms length, which I took as not wanting to really engage. So I did not end up giving her a sample session, and instead tried to connect personally. But the bottom line is I don’t think we connected well on either a professional or a personal level.

    Happy Saturday,
I got home tonight and found a check in the mail for $450. from Janna, who I asked near the beginning of our 30 days. So, one client/money in hand! I’m coaching Janna once a month, for one hour for $150./hour.
Today, I asked Frank to ask Lisa if she would do a sample session with me. Does it count if it’s a third party invite?!? Frank & Lisa are friends and Frank has told Lisa about my coaching and Lisa is interested, but says she can’t afford it. I told Frank to tell Lisa that I would like to do a sample session with her anyway. Frank is asking Lisa if it’s okay to give me her contact info and/or to have her call me directly. I’m hoping one of my other invite closing here next week.

Oops! I forgot to say why I offered a session to my two new people today – they are Tastefully Simple distributors and I am hoping to help they grow their businesses. Offering a session to a person who is doing well and to her downline is good for both of them. I am not sure if they would be willing to pay as their mentors offer “coaching” weekly. I doubt if the coaching is at the level of our coaching but I’m not attached to who takes coaching as long as some people do.

I called them, Kara and Janet and set up sessions in December. I also scheduled a person who I met on Thursday night. I am finding that the scheduling and the doing of the sessions is what is taking long. I need to get all of the Yesses scheduled and only offer one session a day until I get all that done. But hey, this is a good problem to have!!

EM approach to young man marking time in a low end job while he determines where he wants to go.

Need to go through the list of all those I’ve approached by email, send them another note then give them a call. Have used the system in sales. Need to get it on a roll here, to gain experience at landing the fish and momentum.

Sure am getting into the habit of making an approach every day. Thrilled about that. No money from anyone yet though and times a wasting.

Elisabeth, The “Expanding Your Practice” is David’s set of 6 CDs. I believe much of the material he has shared with us is from this material. I received an email offering something like $100 on it if I renewed my information. (I’ve been on his list for several years.) When I did I received notice to pay $1 and I’d get a code I could use to purchase this set for $100 off. But today is the last day it will apply. No word yet. I hope they will honor it.

Lay down for a little nap last night and fell asleep. Must have been exhausted.

    So here’s last night’s report:

I had sent out an invite to my very small list of former students and friends and one of my former students wrote back that she may want to take me up on it!

I also approached a woman at a check-out counter at Staples (yeah, my first really cold approach) and invited her. Call it intuition. She said she’s a single Mom and is working 3 jobs! I told her I might be able to help her get into a better place. She did take my card. I didn’t get hers (but I may see her again — I shop there quite a bit).

She’ll probably not be able to pay my “full fee” whatever that may turn out to be, or even my full discounted fee, unless of course I can help her get a better job etc.

    Another piece of news:

Attended a meeting of NSA-Virginia and someone said there are dozens of service organizations and I should just approach them all… and I’ve already thought about how I can work both my lifecoaching and my coaching small businesses on their way to an online presence services into either of my two freebie talks, so I’m going to contact as many of those clubs as I can and get myself booked!

I had considered that earlier, but at the time, the only thing I had been hoping to get out of it were paid speaking gigs, and the odds for getting those are long.

Coaching, however, has opened up whole new possibilities, because the odds of getting coaching clients out of this are, I think, excellent.

    On with the day!

He was really excited about it and will follow up for me. That can be set up for after my trip to Oz:-) He’s also coming back for a couple of energy sessions before I go in December.
Paul is coming in today for a series of sessions, after hearing from Carla how it was!
Tomorrow I have sessions with Ruben and SJ.
    I’m having a ball!

I coached Lee today. She found the session extremely helpful, and due to financial contraints did not sign up and is willing to give me referrals. We then went to a play where some friends were performing. After the play, Lee and Deanna (who I had coached last week) starting talking to two people there about how great their sessions had been. I offered both the people commentary sessions. They both smiled, but really didn’t appear interested. They both have my number. I will contact each of them in a couple of weeks privately and see if they are interested.

This is great experience. I am really interested in offering group sessions. Most of my contacts have had financial constraints, or at least that is what they say. David and anyone else, what do you think. Can you give us any recommendations about group session?

Scheduled a session with Jeff from our networking event last night. It will take some time and work to get the sessions set up. I’m sorry that I have been missing most of the calls but I am listening to the recordings and find them very helpful.

Yay Patty! I feel the same way – the more we do, the more people reach out to us.

I invited a neighbor, Cathy, who is a counselor as I thought it would be interesting for us to discuss the differences and similarities in our approach. She gave a resounding YES, and that she would benefit from it. Her daughter is soon to be in career transition so thought she might recommend me to her.

Also had an interesting meeting today with an established Austin executive coach and O.D. consultant who use to work for Dell. She suggested a bunch of companies, professional organizations, other coaches and a coaching contracting group for potential work so lots of potential.

Friday: Today’s invite went to a friend/business associate, Bill – we have done each other some favors and today he interviewed me for a local show he does. Afterward, he and I were talking a bit and I offered him a session – he declined at this point, but may take me up on the offer in the future. He wanted to wait until at least we have our current “barter” complete and not mix the business with more personal issues.

Emailed a collegue I’ve worked with quite a bit in the past, who I know has struggles with his businesses.

Offered him a trial session. Using David’s pattern, (haven’t got it memorized yet but getting there) will see. Not converting nearly enough of the trial sessions into paying clients though. How do I get better at that?

Yesterday I had a free session with Jill. She was really excited about signing up, but needs to speak with her husband and get back to me by Monday.

Yesterday, I also invited Linda R a free session. She is reaching retirement and not sure what she is going to do after.

Today, I invited Jeanette T. She is the wife of a new client and is liking what she is seeing with her husband. She wants to see what it would be like for her. We will do it next week.

    Hi everyone:

Today I invited Melissa W. who manages the bank branch that I use.

It’s really getting easy and seems quite natural to steer a conversation to the topic of coaching and offer a session.

Happy Friday to all — Bob

I was wondering who I was going to invite today when the phone rang, and it was a man who had seen my ad in Small Business Monthly. He has a dream of opening his own business and eventually letting go of his “day job,” and was curious about coaching. I invited him to a complimentary session and he said yes. We are scheduled for next Friday afternoon.

It is amazing that the more people I invite, the more opportunities come my way, like nomination for an SBA award and someone seeing my ad and calling.

Sue S is scheduling her complimentary session for next week, to get clarity on the direction she takes her business. She is at a crossroads and could use another perspective.

    I’ll keep you posted!

Received $150 for an hour of coaching from Jan P. and we are scheduled again in 2 weeks.

    Hello 30 dayers
Today I invited Grace to be my client. Grace and I went to coaching training together and I already coach a friend of hers. She said she would consider it, but would be more interested in a group coaching or business consulting arrangement. So, not much of a possibility for a client, but we had a great conversation around what we would do together.

O.K. Folks. My husband pointed out that it’s easy for people to google for key words – like their name – & read what we’re writing. So from now on, all my contacts will be named “Barb” or “Bob,” But they’ll be different people. \”/

Barb, a spunky 69 year old I met at the WA STATE SENIOR GAMES biking competion accepted a comp intro for tonight at 9:00 PM (when she has free cell phone time. . .yawn . . .)

Just had two intros, one with Barb, a “too close” friend – “a prophet is not without honor, except in his own city.” The second, with , who’s done a lot of personal healing & growth work and had a coach previously for 7 years. She complemented me on my soothing, energizing voice on the phone, said she would talk with two friends she had in mind as potentially wanting a coach like me, and keep me in mind when she again needed a coach. I’m pleased I’m not discouraged by not obtaining a client. reading everyone’s blogs is so very helpful with this. Thanks folks!!!

I spoke with one of my sisters-in-law today and she didn’t want a sample session but gladly referred me to two people who are in my niche. This was great. And wow, as I am writing this, she just e-mailed me with yet another referral.

I also reached out to my old high school friend, Laurie, and scheduled to talk to her tomorrow evening.

While this process of reaching out to people I know to offer sample sessions is great practice, what is starting to really make me excited is the prospect of going to trade shows for Green businesses so that I can walk around from booth to booth talking to people in my niche (who are just waiting to talk to whomever walks up to them) and see what their needs are. When someone is needing a coach, it should be obvious.

Had a wonderful session with Yvette today, who’s going through a divorce, and she is coming in for an energy reset session and a colour consultation. Both very powerful tools to realign. After that she may opt for ongoing support coaching.
As I am actually reaching my limit for personal clients my emphasis is now going to getting more groups set up.
I had a session with Lisa today also and she has a huge network in Frankfurt and offered to post my classes on there and also to get some live events set up for next year. The doors are opening up left, right and center!
I also had a session with Akke today and she’s coming in for another session next week at 70 euro.
I have invited Ricardo and he is coming tomorrow.
Now I’m signing out from my computer to have a rest! Back again tomorrow:-)
    joyful blessings, Tina

Hi, everyone – here’s a quick update from the lobby of the music conference. Off to a good start – had two conversations last night (at 2 and 3am respectively!) with new people who expressed interest in my services, including one who’s ready to pay for a consultation.

That was the easy-going “hang-out” night. Today the real business starts – table in the exhibit hall, workshops, full-on participation, getting to know people over meals and at their showcases. Off I go to breakfast – wish me well!

Have been on the road for two days without access. But I’ve still been inviting!!

Heard back from J.M., the long shot I approached via LinkedIn. He accepted! I’m really glad I took that opportunity.

Days 21 and 22: Invited C.K., a current consulting client. I got so pumped up while working with her about her business, I just said, “I HAVE to coach you!” She’s so coachable and so ready to grow her business. We are going to do a sample session week after next when we are finished with the consulting project we’re doing now.

Also invited F.D., the husband of a good friend. He’s about to lose his job of 15+ years due to a merger layoff. He’s not sure he’s ready to be coached yet… which is cool.

I have an intro session today, we’ll see how it goes.

Feel like I have really missed out because I haven’t been able to listen to the calls yet. I will get to that this weekend.

    Happy coaching, everyone!

Invitations offered, 22; accepted, 20; sessions conducted, 2.

Went to the Telstra Businesswomen’s awards today which was totally inspiring and uplifting! Took a long an old work-colleague – Karen M – with me who I know is doing a fair bit of overwhelm at the moment in her business. Over lunch I offered a comp session and she was thrilled! So much so that we did the session straight after lunch in the Sydney sun which went brilliantly.

David – you go, man! I’m still working on who I would like to coach. For some reason, Bill Clinton comes to mind. I met him one time at a football game in 1979 when he was Govenor of Arkansas. I must have picked up on something intuitively when I shook his hand because for some wierd reason I said ‘Yeah, and we want you to run for president.” That was 15 years before he ran. I wasn’t that interested in politics then and I have no idea why I said that. So, I’m just wondering what other intuitive pops I might have for ol’ William. Any body have any connections?

Moving on to an opposite flavor, has anyone experienced people canceling scheduled free trial sessions? I’ve had 4 last minute cancellations this week. Two are rescheduled – the others have legitimate family ur-gencies going on and we all know what can happen there – they never get back to you. Here’s where an e-zine would be a good way to reconnect with them. I’ll try Marcia’s 3 try rule and see what happens.

Today a former California site colleague, F.A. brought me into a Windows web-based meeting so we could work on his resume live. That was a good learning experience for me. He’ll be downsized end of December. I offered to do this pro-bono for him because I really feel for these people who I worked with for several years.

What came out of it was a scheduled trial coaching session next week with him. He has two direct reports who will also be in career transition so I’ve offered to assist them as well. They will have good severence packages which allows them the FREEDOM to work with a career coach like me! I’m also putting out there that they pass the word on to others who will be phased out.

I also invited a long distance friend – actually I’m hoping she will refer me to her daughter.

11/13/08 I offered a comp to Nancy, the manager of the Safeway gas pumps next door to the 24 hour fitness club. We had a great chat in the changing room. She wasn’t overly enthusiastic about coaching, but I think she’ll take me up. And I’m beginning to get the hang of asking for referrals. Came home & sent her an email invitation to follow up my verbal invitation.

Tonight I invited Jamie W., a dynamo of a woman I met a while back, who has a big vision for young people and has created a program that expresses it. I invited her because I want to reconnect with her, and if I can help her in the process, all the better!

I also invited 36 people who were at the conference where I spoke. We’ll see the response I get from them.

I just learned today that the SBA nomination is due tomorrow, and that I have a lot of information to compile before then, so I will say goodnight. Wish me luck, and thanks to all for your generous sharing!

Thursday: My invite today was borderline not okay because I was talking to a potential student (I’m the Director of a Health & Wellness Institute), but we were chatting on the phone and she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do… etc. and I mentioned that while I can’t counsel her specifically and tell her what to do, I was also a life coach and I could talk with her free of charge with a mini-session.

So, we did one right then – it was great and I think very helpful for her and I gave her some “homework” for the weekend and we have an admissions appt at the school on Monday. Even if she decides not to enroll at my school, it felt really good to give her some guidance to help her make her decisions.

Today was a fantastic day! I gave one free session that we couldn’t finish but will finish next week. My networking group hosted a mixer tonight where I have pending sessions with Marcella because she is an entrepreneur who can likely want coaching, Naomi, who needs some help with her real estate, Jeff, who wants to do a film, Terri, my old social studies teacher and her husband maybe, Kristen, the event planner and some acquaintences who haven’t followed up to make appointments yet – Marissa, Barry, Steve. Emailed Kathy H. this morning. Kathy works with prison inmates and has a social work background. She’s also trained and studied in energy therapies and from my knowledge has not experienced a coaching session before, so I think she’ll go for it.

Did an intro session with Sam B. last night, which included a couple of NLP processes. I look forward to hearing from her in the next few days.

Renae B. hasn’t replied to my offer of deferring my coaching fee until after she’s received her first presentation fee. Is there anyone else out there who’s trained in NLP? I could use a session. I’m getting frustrated at not having produced a paying client yet.

Invited Abi today, she’s a color consultant and is very open to energy work but she was so busy that she didn’t want to commit right now. Had a session with Marjan today and she was struggling with getting clear on what she wants, how to choose. The clarity from this 1 session gave her a big breakthrough and she recommended me to one of her friends, who’s coming in tomorrow.
Had a session with Ria today and she booked in for a master tune up session next week, at 270 euro, and from there may continue with ongoing support sessions.
Busy, busy but lots of fun!

Another invitation for a coaching trial session to a member of our nonprofit corporation.

Board has indicated that they want to encourage coaching. Its a natural sale (at least free trial sale 🙂 to invite members of the board to sample what they are recommending in principle.

Today I am in Montreal for the ICF conference! Meeting 6 coach friends and looking forward to a great 3 days. I brought my laptop JUST so I would make sure I post my invitations each day. I wonder how difficult it will be to ask for a client in a ballroom of coaches?!? Luckily, I already asked someone today. I invited Peter W. (Different Peter than the other day–that was Peter F,) I have asked Peter to be a client for the last 6 months. He is/was interested, then suffered a serious illness that resulted in surgery and rehabilitation. I just reached out to him again and he is on the mend and ready to re-establish our conversation. I am meeting him for coffee next week.
