Coaching is not advice.\u00a0 It\u2019s coaching.\u00a0 As a human being, you will<\/em> have opinions regarding what a client should do.\u00a0 But you need to be really clear about when this is your opinion, versus helping them get clear for themselves on what they should do.\u00a0 At different times, your client will want both.<\/p>\n

\u201cShould I break up with my boyfriend?\u201d\u00a0 A coaching response might be: \u201cWhat is best for you?\u201d<\/p>\n

I had a client looking to make extra income.\u00a0 She was actually considering applying to work for an escort agency.\u00a0 My initial reaction, which I stifled, was \u2014 \u201cSurely there\u2019s an alternative to prostitution!\u201d\u00a0 But remembering I had my coaching hat on, I asked her why.\u00a0 It seemed she didn\u2019t have any moral judgments about it, and thought it might actually be an interesting experience.\u00a0 She did have other options, so it wasn\u2019t coming out of desperation.\u00a0 In fact, I discovered the main thing holding her back from pursuing this avenue, was worrying about what a future partner might think of her \u2014 which I don\u2019t find a powerful reason for any decision!\u00a0 In the course of time, she made her own decision not to follow that path.\u00a0 But she wasn\u2019t stifled by the judgments and opinions of her coach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
