{"id":1182,"date":"2012-02-22T12:00:36","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T18:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/life-coaching-resource.com\/blog\/?p=1182"},"modified":"2012-01-31T22:46:08","modified_gmt":"2012-02-01T04:46:08","slug":"what-coaching-isnt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.life-coaching-resource.com\/blog\/what-coaching-isnt\/","title":{"rendered":"What Coaching Isn&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following is an excerpt from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coachstart.com\/\">CoachStart Manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The most obvious point to remember is that coaching is not therapy, counseling, or psychology.\u00a0 In addition, coaching should not be confused with consulting or mentoring \u2014 there are subtle differences between each of these interventions.\u00a0 Whilst the coaching process may have originated in the field of psychology and intervention often follows some psychological models, the actual coaching process should not be mistaken for a therapeutic intervention. Some of the differences include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Mentoring:<br \/>\n<\/em>The passing on of knowledge, experiences, and skills usually by someone within the company who is older and wiser.\u00a0 Usually more specifically career-oriented information. \u00a0A mentor has normally achieved the goal themselves, while a coach may not have any experience in the given coaching area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Consulting:<br \/>\n<\/em>Often using your <em>own<\/em> skills to improve a given situation, as opposed to developing the client\u2019s skills to a level that can cope effectively with the situation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Therapy and counseling:<br \/>\n<\/em>Tends to focus on feelings related to past events and processing such feelings.\u00a0 Coaching is oriented towards goal setting and encouraging the client to actively move forward. \u00a0Tony Grant from Sydney University has said: \u201cTherapy is like helping someone with a broken leg to walk again. \u00a0Coaching is helping them to run the four minute mile\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following is an excerpt from the\u00a0CoachStart Manual.
