Traditional Publishing vs Entrepreneurial Publishing

Posted by David Wood |

I have no idea which way to go right now.

Advantages of Traditional publishers:
– handle a lot of the headache (e.g. language translation), and can get really good distrubution – if they want to. They can also help promote your book, but typically only do that for a few.
– advance (useful if you don’t believe in the book’s success but they do, and if you need the cash)
– looks good; credible

Disavantages of Traditional Publishers:
– low royalty (8% instead of 20%)
– might keep high control of content, packaging, title, and things like electronic rights
– might limit you putting in calls to action

Once upon a time you could either go traditional, or self publish. Seems this new breed of publisher allows you to kind of self publish, but also get distribution…..

I’ll let you know what I decide.

It seems to me that self publishing or going through sites such as Lulu.com reduce costs all around and would offer a higher retention of profits, freedom in writing, reduced costs to consumer and therefore increased sales, and you can promote te book as you travel. It may not come with an advance on sales but it would likely sell longer producing more income over time.
