2. FEATURE: How I Got Started

A major business magazine is talking about publishing my story early this year. I enjoyed their questions and writing the answers, and realized many readers have an interest in how I got started in the business.

Here are my answers to this journalist; I hope you find them useful:

1) How did you get started?

I was in a cushy consulting job on Park Avenue – helping multinationals with their international pension fund arrangements. Sexy, hmm? I was an actuary with a numbers addiction, and only 1% of the population had any idea what I did.

I did a personal development course with Landmark Education because my marriage was falling apart, and lo – the clouds parted.

I saw people having life changes in three short days, that most people wouldn’t have in a life time. Cynical, actuarial David gradually gave way to a man who saw great possibility for all people – beyond what most can imagine.

I quit my consulting job and started handing out business cards that said “life coach”. When I had 23 clients in 5 countries, making 6 figures working 2 days a week on the phone, I found new coaches and other professionals flocking to me to find out how to build a successful coaching practice using the internet.

Now I show all professionals how to share their gift with the world using the internet. And how to automate it, so they serve the world while they sleep, freeing up their time for other things that get the soul juiced up! From my laptop, I shout my message to 91 countries, encouraging people to escape their wage slavery and do the same.

2) Why did you choose the business you’re in?

As mentioned above, I was blown away by what was possible in people’s lives. I realized I was naturally coaching people anyway; I just wasn’t getting paid for it. I found I had a natural flair for marketing and a talent for training and writing. I couldn’t stop coaching people if I tried. I combined these with my nerdy internet genes and an online business was born.

3) What are your goals for 2009?

There are so many!

  • Launch my new book to best-seller status: “THE WEALTHY GYPSY How to travel the world, serve others, and get paid for it” (still playing with the title).
  • Use the book as an excuse to do a national talk-show and radio tour to build profile and sales and reach more people.
  • Have Richard Branson write the foreword to the book.
  • Develop a $15,000 product.
  • Develop a 3 day retreat/bootcamp.
  • Develop a high end coaching program for The Wealthy Gypsy training.
  • Write four more books.
  • Deliver 4 speeches to audiences over 1000, selling $300,000 in training at each.
  • Increase my rate of taking ideas to reality by a factor of 10. How? By posting ALL internal projects on a web site, and inviting my 70,000 subscribers to either volunteer for, or manage a project. Some will receive product in exchange, some will be paid cash, and some will share in the profits. This project (in progress) can be viewed at www.solutionbox.com/mindmap/index.pdf (by publishing date this will be fully functional with application forms).
  • Live communally with friends for 3 months out of the year.

***

Action: Post on the blog:

1) What’s one action you will take to increase your exposure to the media?

2) What are YOUR goals for 2009?

3) Post your answers to the blog.

***

Enjoy!

Thank you so much for sharing and esp for all the free stuff. You help me get a start on making my dreams come true. My goals for 2009 are to write 3 e-books which I have had in my head & on bits of paper for ages, to expand my company’s service learning programmes to others easily with a e-kit, to start and maintain blogs for my company, my son’s adventures, for parents. With goals set…I have achieved 1000 x more in just 2-3 months! It’s powerful and I have placed your free goals report on my blogs 🙂 Thanks for helping me to help others.

    Awesome posts.
I am getting the idea how and where to get started myself. I keep on getting people with many problems and I have been successful in helping them.

I have to create a website and a newsletter as you suggested. But don’t know how to get started?

Want to create an income of Rs. 20k per month from my network marketing business.

I love this David. Talk about stepping up and owning your space. That’s the secret to making it happen … stepping into it.
I encourage people to do this all the time and still have difficulties with my own commitment to owning who I want to be.
Today in an informal conversation with a client/colleague and friend she threw it back at me and encouraged me to promote my credibility and experience to my niche network.
So that’s exactly what I am going to do. Instead of just posting a link to a survey I want them to fill out, in my next communications to them, I will provide them with the background that supports why I am THE go-to support person for socially & environmentally responsible businesses and professionals. Full stop!

Great post. I’m new to coaching and to this list and am looking forward to the inspiration. This post inspired me to think BIG, and also to use my pre-coaching life and career as an advertising executive rather than throw out the baby with the bathwater. Like you, I have been coaching my clients for years. I have also been helping them articulate their thoughts and brand identities using my writing, marketing and communications skills. I’ve also had a lot of experience presenting ideas to a group in entertaining ways, so public speaking is nothing new to me. I see that I have unique talents and tools that can set me apart and give extra value to my coaching clients. And that there is nothing to stop me from getting someone famous to write (or at least approve) a foreword for my book!!
    Thanks for the ideas.

I have been receving your e-letters for years now and realised that I didn’t want my business to grow as it would mean that I would have to change my ‘cushy’ life. this year i have decided to lift the lid on that and move forward – aiming for the country lifestyle fully supporting by my coaching business. I am in the process of purchasing your tools one by one and bringing my business up in to that greater level. As and Indigenous Australian I am one of a handful of Coaches and more specifically ICF accredited coaches and I want to be get coaching out their among Aboriginal people so that they can develop goals and visins for themselves and their families and have better lives – further to that I’d like to develop some org to train other ABnl people to become ICF credentialed coaches as I keep working toward my PCC at this stage and ultimately my MCC. Thanks David.

    Dear David
    1. I can summarize one inspiring thing about your “How i got started” in seemingly effortless way you induced the change from actuary into life
coach after attending personal development course and seeing changes taking place quickly SIMPLY BECAUSE IT’S POSSIBLE so long as we focus our efforts and make space for new concepts and ideas to CHANGE OUR THINKING/CONCIOUSNESS.
2.Attend to creating of my own website on NLP coaching.
    3. Three major goals i am going to persue in 2009 are:
a)working on my primary relationship b)health c)continue coaching

Inspiring is to realise possibilities that do exist in the world at any given
moment, and to focus and act on them rather then focusing internally.
One step that i’ll take during next week is developing my own website on
    NLP coaching.

Ok, let’s see if I can find answers for everything that I need to….

    1) This article gave me hope, I think. It showed me that I am actually moving in the right direction, and that if I keep pushing then I will make it! It also provided some solid direction, which is something that I was definitely lacking up to this point.

    2) To increase my exposure to the media, I think I would like to try writing a few articles for the local paper, just about the way that coaching is influencing my life and growing/changing me as a person. David, you published a book… I will maybe try and start a bit smaller (with these articles) and then grow from there!

    3) My goals for 2009 are kind of huge actually….
    – I want to be able to realistically “retire” by December 31st this year… or at least, be at a point where I do not NEED to work anymore, but can instead volunteer and work when I choose (and not have my hours dictated to me by a boss)
    – I want to grow my coaching to a point where I would consider it my full-time job
    – I want to expand what I do and really work on setting up the “special project” that my partner and I have been tossing ideas about around. This project is HUGE, but I think that it could be a very positive thing for the world and our local society

    Hi David Wood,

Here is my plan for 2009….

first, i m thinking about my ideal situation: To have a place i can built upon, having all sorts of people come in, share, read, explore. Fill it with art and nice furniture, books and materials to use. Tea, and healthy tasty snacks. And then i have a place to work, play, and display learning techniques.
It strikes me that my heart is so big, and that it is so hard to ask people for money, even for such great plans where everybody will benefit from. But now i feel like i really have something to offer and will not delay my great plans any longer! I ll start by spreading the word, and ask donations, and invite everybody! Thanks for the digital support! 🙂

    David,
I am hearing an alarm go off every time I hear you speak of your goals. It is because I am sure you can accomplish enough to remain happy but I must share my story. I started out my working life as a cabinetmakers apprentice. We made very high end reproductions using period tools and methods. I loved working on the bench. My goals quickly climbed in numbers and value. I would be working 10 dreams at once. As my own designs began to take on popularity I was flying high or my ego was anyway. Until one day I realized I was very depressed. Why ? I should be happy. After a couple of years of trying to derail my successful life I realized that I was not working on the bench anymore. I was always dealing, selling and talking to critics about my own designs, but I really loved working with my hands, the reason I got started in the first place. I started basing my success upon how much I was making selling my work while others built it. For me all the mentioning about how much money you are going to make is replacing how many people you are going to help which will dwindle in numbers due to your demand and rising fees. I really enjoy working with your tools and I can see more of yourself in the early ones than I am now. Is this what you want? I personally hope you will spend more time on the commune where you can practice being simple again. I also wish you all the happiness you deserve, but for everyone that cannot afford your rates anymore and more and more have to work with your replacements or partners I wish you good luck. I’ll continue along studying your techniques hoping I don’t loose site of the real reason I’m doing this.

    Hi David
    In answer to your questions:

    1) What’s one action you will take to increase your exposure to the media?
I’m going to do this … post comments on blogs that I like … and post on my own blog at least 5 times a week.

    2) What are YOUR goals for 2009?
I’m developing a number of micro social enterprises and am self publishing a Life Dreaming workbook.

Today I posted the nearly final draft of the Life Dreaming workbook I wrote – FREE – on my LizBiz blog.

I’m also learning how to use Joomla so I can build affordable online learning spaces (with a cloud of social media) for small to medium non profits in Ireland. That’s my SKIL2 social enterprise.

And then there’s the organic food growing course I’m starting so I can share the learning with children in the Sunny Funny Community Garden I created last year here in Ballinamore.

There’s heaps of learning I want/need to do about building my social enterprises online and will be rss – ing your site.

Thanks for everything you share David.

I send you warm wishes for a prosperous and fun 2009.

    Best regards

    Liz

    Hi David,
I found lots in common with your story, except I have made 90degree changes several times (about every 7 years) and my changes ,although very satisfying for me as a person did not earn me lots of money.
I coach government organizations and private enterprises who want to become energy efficient. I have done two countries, but America is a tough nut.
I know it is very necessary, but I would like to be rewarded also.
Maybe you can give me some valuable tips.
    Thanks

    Hi David,
It’s always inspiring to see how someone got started and made it big, you are a fantastic role model! It just reinforces my goal for this year to double my income and cut the hours I work in half using the power of the internet. I am meeting a lot of wonderful coaches who are hopelessly underpaid because they don’t really know how to marke themselves, so I am planning to take a few of them with me on the journey and have them learn from me which makes me be 1 step ahead of them, great motivation!

    All the best

    Wow David,

I was just talking to someone about Landmark today and am thinking of using that in place of coaching this year. The program I am interested in includes coaching.

I have a talk show on the local radio station that streams to the internet. I would love to turn some shows into products. If this seems like a win/win for you, call me at (845)357-4191 or e-mail me at irene@eaglelifecoaching.com.
Maybe the radio would be a good forum for your book and then the files can be used in different ways.

I want to grow my coaching practice and face the final frontier – fear of marketing. It’s going well so far and your coaching challenge helped with that.
I am excited about finishing my e-book and possibly turning it into a paperback book with a product that goes along with it. The book is about overcoming internal obstacles to success.

I also want to become a certified life purpose coach. Right now I coach mostly entrepreneurs.

Debbie – I can coach you for a song if our schedules match up and we are a good fit. I’d love to coach a coach who has good “right brain” ideas.

I have been doing Landmark courses for the past 10 years. You are absolutely correct in seeing other people have life changes as well as getting them for yourself. I’m completely passionate about that education. One of the biggest things I got out of doing the work was I am a writer and I am a coach. I’ve coached a number of people while taking courses and gotten many compliments.

I have written two books: 1. How-to; 2. Novel (both unpublished). I am now a Grant Writer.

I recently left my 36 year emotionally abusive marriage and moved to AZ.

I get lit up about starting a coaching business and then I get completely frustrated/disheartened – I become so stopped. I, too, have coached people all of my life, but it seems I’m constantly bumping up against the non-coachable people. I coached with a mentor for about 4-6 months, then gave it up because of money.

What I’m up to this year, I’m not sure. I’m shinging the flashlight around.

Thank you for this article, I really do feel quite inspired by you. I have ever since I bought the “CoachStart” manual.

I seem to have a knack for coming up with great ideas, I get lost trying to put them into place. I wish I was a marketing wizard, that I am not.

    Thanks again, for the article.

Thanks for this great article. I quit my job in december to develop my bookkeeping and coaching business.

My goal this year was to develop my niches of coaching lones parents. I was fortunate to get some work with Gingerbread (they help lone parents) I was delighted when I was innluded in a 10 minutes programme on BB1 and BBC2, it showed me training the women on how to build their confidence as well as how i got over being a lone parent after a marriage of emotional and ohysical abuse and at the same month I had lost my job, my house was going to be repossed, I had so much debts and 2 children to look after. My faith and training to be a coach helped me.

I now want to use this to help my coaching business, and your article has given me some ideas I can now expand on.

This is the link to me (Genny )on BBC1 life line appeal http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00gq42z/Lifeline_18_01_2009

    Thanks
