Feel it All

The following is an excerpt of one of David’s coaching sessions in Top Coaching Techniques.

David: Remember any feelings you have about it, they are all natural and all okay to have. They don’t mean anything. They’re just feelings and part of being a human being. Feel it all. It’s okay.

Client: Okay. All right. Sounds good.

David: I don’t normally say this, but I am here for you.

Client: I really appreciate that. When I emailed you during the week – that really helped.

David: Some people are going through little changes, some big. You are normal and natural if you wanted a little more support. The message is, if you ever need to call me or email me, please do it. My guess is, you’re only going to need two or three minutes, especially since you are on a great path.

Finding Joy in Your Finances

The following is an excerpt of David’s interview in Top Coaching Techniques.

Ingrid: Are you saying finances could be a source of joy?

David: Absolutely. The first step you need to find out is, how much is going in or out each month.

Ingrid: That sounds like a budget.

David: It sort of is. You need to find out how much is going in and out. If more is coming in than going out, you are going to be feeling good. You’ll know you are going in the right directions. It makes an amazing difference.

Ingrid: Making that first step can be sort of like going to the dentist when you haven’t gone in thirteen years. You don’t know what to expect. You don’t know how much you are spending and you don’t want to know.

David: Right. You don’t want to look at it. Don’t do a budget first. As a great first step, decide why you are saving. You need to know what you are saving for. You aren’t going to want the pain when you don’t know the gain. Pick something – it could be a five year or ten year target – a vacation, to be financially independent, feeling good with twenty grand in the bank should you ever need it.

Create Your Own Materials/Forms

The following is a transcription taken from Explode Your Practice.

One of the things that she is struggling in is what she wants to do on the career side. I want to get her in touch with where her passions are. How can I open this conversation?

David: well what you probably want to do is develop a regular practice. What you do with her, you are going to want to do with someone else in a couple of weeks. And improve it. So get it on paper, hone it, you can duplicate it, turn it into an ecourse, seminar, printed book, teleclass. You don’t have to go all out. Sit down and write out 15-20 questions. It’s so easy to turn this into a two-month program. I had a client write out questions. I said these 10 can be a book or this can go into articles. Or you can turn that into a free report. Find your dream job with this report.

Extra Source of Income

The following is an excerpt of one of David’s coaching sessions in Top Coaching Techniques.

Client: What do you think of getting extra sources of income?

David: I think you can. We’ve been talking about how to cut your expenses because it’s the quickest way. But, do you have more time? You might want to do a little work on the side, like waiting on tables or consulting. You can also look at increasing your hourly pay rate, which we talked about on another show. You could either do that or switch jobs, or get training to increase your skill level. I have to say, these are longer-term strategies. Cutting expenses is the easiest and quickest way.

Common Coaching Issues

The following is an excerpt of David’s interview in Top Coaching Techniques.

Ingrid: What are some of the most common things that people come to you with?

David: One of the biggest ones is career direction. People are actually getting to a point – not just in Australia, but around the world – where they’re thinking, ‘You know what? There must be more to life. I don’t want to work in this job anymore, I want to find something that I’m really passionate about and I’d like to get paid for it.’

Forgive and Move On

The following is an excerpt of one of David’s coaching sessions in Top Coaching Techniques.

David: I was thinking this could be an opportunity to train people in how to be with you, but I wonder if you could just take this as your mother was actually making a contribution to you.

Client: Yeah. She was within her full rights and I wasn’t prepared to give any ground on that occasion, because I was just angry and that was my reaction.

David: Right, and you were being defensive and you were plugged in.

Client: Right.

David: Got it. Is there anything that you need to clean up with your mom over that interaction?

Client: I think I’ve got a lot to clean up with my mom over everything. My father is a very passive person. He used to run his own business and he was very smart, but very passive. All of his staff always loved him. For instance, my sister had a bit of a run in with people at a tennis club one weekend and the person spoke to my dad, and my dad said, ‘Yeah, she’s got a bit of her mother in her.’

So my mother is very aggressive and she was always the one that disciplined us as kids. My father was always the man for the moment, you know. He would say, ‘what’s done, is done’ and how can we cure it? He was never very heavily emotional, whereas mom was always the one who would give a spanking or whatever. You knew if you got a spanking from my father you’d done something really wrong.

David: Right. Well, if I can do a little coaching here – and this is in the communications area – as a coach right now, I’m feeling a little bit lost, and this is normal. I think it’s because I’m hearing a lot of the stories from you. Like ‘this is what happened, and mom was like this’, but it’s really about now. So if you can talk in terms of ‘I feel’ and ‘this is what there is to clean up with my mom right now’, I think I’ll be able to really get it right between my eyes.
